Abstract
This Ghanaian study investigates whether strategic management practices (SMP) enhance organizational environmental performance (OEP) and if green technology adoption (GTA) influences this relationship. Using a cross-sectional survey of 274 managers and sustainability professionals across various industries, the authors employed EFA, CFA, hierarchical regression, and SEM to test their hypotheses.
The main finding is counterintuitive: SMP and GTA each improve sustainability on their own, but when combined at high levels, they undermine each other, likely due to coordination challenges and resource constraints. This shows that the sequencing and alignment of efforts are as crucial as the level of investment in each.
Presented within a “compensatory moderation” framework, the study contends that strategic and technological approaches do not merely add up to produce straightforward benefits. It recommends that managers in resource-limited African organizations prioritize and sequence investments rather than attempt to pursue both simultaneously. Limitations of the study include its cross-sectional design, possible common method bias, and the characterization of GTA as a single composite.
